HAYWARD, Calif., Feb. 17 -- Thermage, Inc. announced today the availability of a new treatment tip that deploys radiofrequency (RF) energy into the skin at a faster speed. The fast treatment tip reduces RF delivery time by 64% without affecting the clinical outcome. As Thermage plans to develop a wide range of treatment tips to address various medical applications, this key advancement marks a milestone in the company's R&D efforts.
The Thermage method uses non-invasive radiofrequency (RF) technology to smooth wrinkles around the eye by tightening loose skin. During treatment, a cooling spray protects the skin's top layers while the treatment tip delivers RF energy (heat) into the deeper skin layers. This heating action promotes immediate collagen contraction and generates new collagen fibers over time.
"With this technology improvement, Thermage has delivered on its commitment to the aesthetic community to develop a faster treatment tip. Physicians are provided dramatically reduced procedure times and, as a result the patient experience is more pleasing," said Bob Byrnes, CEO of Thermage.
In a customer preference evaluation using the fast treatment tip and the first commercialized standard treatment tip on the same patients, 98% of physicians rated treatment speed as important to the procedure. The physicians also estimated a 29% reduction in treatment time when using the faster tip. In addition, when patients were asked which treatment tip they preferred, 84% of patients selected the fast tip. Moreover, 75% of patients better tolerated the treatment with the fast tip than the standard tip.
The highly sophisticated fast tip also incorporates a new detection feature labeled Tip-to-Skin detection. This detection feature permits delivery of RF energy only if all four corners of the treatment tip are in contact with the skin's surface, thereby further facilitating safe RF administration.
The non-ablative Thermage device, called ThermaCool TC(TM), bypasses the surface skin and requires no incisions or recovery time, making it the only non-invasive procedure that tightens skin. Recent media exposure included The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, CNN and numerous local television broadcasts nationwide.
About Thermage
Thermage was founded in 1996 to build a foundation of patents and technologies based on the hypothesis that radiofrequency energy could be used to achieve a desired cosmetic or therapeutic effect on the skin without damaging the epidermis. The Company's headquarters are located in Hayward, California in the middle of the technology triangle between Silicon Valley, San Francisco and Oakland.
